The shooting of two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies in an apparent ambush prompted a manhunt for the shooter, the president’s reaction and protests outside the hospital where injured congressmen were being treated Saturday night in California.
Both the 31-year-old congresswoman and the 24-year-old deputy were operated on Saturday night, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a late-night press conference. Both graduated from the academy 14 months ago, he said.

“It pisses me off. It makes me dismayed at the same time,” he said.

The department shared a video of the shooting in a Twitter message showing a person opening fire through the passenger-side window of the patrol car.

“The shooter approached the deputies and opened fire without warning or provocation,” the department said.

The video elicited thousands of responses, including U.S. President Donald Trump, who replied, “Animals that need to be hit hard.

A radio reporter who was in the vicinity of the demonstration site was taken into custody, KABC-TV reported. It was not immediately clear why she had been detained.

Captain Kent Wegener said officers were covering the area looking for a suspect seen in the video opening fire with a pistol.

“We have a very, very generic description,” he said.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. a short distance from the Compton Sheriff’s Station.

In a Sunday morning tweet, Democratic candidate Joe Biden called the shooting “unacceptable,” saying the perpetrator “must be brought to justice.

“Violence of any kind is wrong; those who commit it should be caught and punished,” he wrote. “Jill and I keep the MPs and their loved ones in our hearts and pray for a full recovery.”
